Ideas for Summer Work in Reading, Writing, Spelling
- Phonics/Spelling
- Practice letter sounds and common parts of words in isolation (reading and spelling) following sound sheets attached
- Word Hunts-Look for words with common spelling patterns
- Word Sorts-sort words into groups with like pattern or rules
- Break words into syllables (there are 6 syllable types)
- Break words into sounds
- Rhyming-recognize and generate rhyming words
- Word Manipulation-make words with letter tiles - use common patterns to guide you -all, ake, ap, ot
Reading
- Use Dolch or Fry high frequency word lists to practice reading words quickly and automatically. (make flashcards)
- Read books at your Just Right Level (five finger rule)
- Re read familiar books again and again-remember your fluency -
- (reading like you are telling the story)
- use expression, tone, accuracy-
- Read, read, read, read, read
- Have someone read aloud to you - pick a book just above your grade level so this adult can model fluency, expression, stopping and thinking, questioning, predicting, visualizing and using context to figure out new vocabulary words
Writing
- Handwriting-practice your letter formation, line placement and spacing-say the sounds as you write the letters
- Write about a book you are reading-include characters, character traits, setting, problem, solution
- Write a story - make sure your story has a beginning, middle and end.....add details - remember to write so the reader can visualize.
- Cut up sentences-Write a sentence then cut it up and put it back together.
- Keep a journal of the fun things you do this summer
- Remember to check for capitals, periods, spaces between your words
