Glossary of Terms
Just Right Books-books that your child can read fluently.  They do not get stuck on more than 5 words on a page.


5 Finger Rule - the formula used in helping children pick out just right books - if you get stuck on 5 words or more, the book is too hard. Try it again in a few weeks!


Word Attack Skills-The skills used to figure out an unknown word


Context Clues- Using meaning to help figure out unknown words


High Frequency Words (aka sight words)-Words that are most commonly seen in reading. The more often you come across words, the more likely you are to commit them to memory.


Phonemic awareness-the knowledge and ability to hear and manipulate sounds in the spoken word.


Phonics- an understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds. It is the building block of reading, Without it reading cannot occur.


Fluency-reading smoothly and with expression -we like to say "reading like you speak"


Comprehension-Understanding what you are reading or is being read. This is the ultimate goal of reading.

Repeated reading-the strategy of having a child reread familiar text. This is done to increase fluency, word recognition and comprehension.
